In a previous post, I talked about how reading can serve to elevate your knowledge, but it also serves as a form of therapy. I have found myself reading different books as I go through different stages in my life. This particular book and its author, has been part of an unannounced journey. The end results? #GoodMorningChronicles By Aya Milagros!

I had the honor to have been part of a LIVE #Goodmorningchronicles with Aya, with her humbleness and her charisma she described her journey to author and self publisher of a book that it is intended to help your personal growth, elevate your faith and regroup your thoughts with positive affirmations that are available to you not only for 30 days...but for the rest of the reader's life.

Aya speaks about her spiritual journey that started back in May 2015. She felt inspired by God and motivated to write on different topics and visions. She started by writing simply on her phone and sharing her thoughts of that day on Social Media, without any idea that it was going to become the material for a book.

Her first concept for her first book, was totally different from what it turned out to be. Initially she wanted her first book to be about her actual life lessons and experiences. She wanted to be able to share with her readers from where she started and how she ended up where she currently was...her journey...from the ground up. however she kept being confronted with a writer's block, it was not flowing naturally. And we all know that whatever format, cannot be forced.

During this period is when she got an illumination about the fact that she already had a book...Her #Goodmorningchronichles ended up being more material than she had ever imagined. Her mindset is that of a visionary and that confirmation is what she needed. This only happen during the past 3 months, for remember she already had been busy with her first book.

#Goodmorningchronicles was born and with that came research, planning and execution. Pretty much she got assistance from different people as she finalized the publishing process, however it needs to be highlighted that thanks to her creativity, her input was much greater than your average 1st time author. This is sufficient reason to feel an immense sense of pride and accomplishment in a industry that is not the easiest to get into.

After this came the fact of setting a deadline....a date that her book would be released on Amazon, followed by the local launch of it. Aya says and I quote: "I got a vision, during spiritual moment, that the date should be June 17th, 2017. And that was enough for me to follow that date, sure enough on that date #Goodmorningchronicles was released on Amazon!

Many talented authors are under the impression that it is an extreme costly process. What is your take on that? "And it probably was 10 years ago, but with the different options that you have out there, this turned out to be a not so expensive investment. Again, proper research is always necessary. The components that makes a book costly are: book cover, book edit, book format. If you can find a short cut with the same quality, I guarantee you that publishing your book is more realistic than you think!"

Was there a specific reason as to why you did not went digital one time? I mean nowadays most people are into their e-books..? " The idea was to release both format at the same time, however, I am experiencing a little delay with the digital version, but this should be resolved shortly".

What would you tell an aspiring author that is afraid of starting a book? "Research your options, tag a deadline and GO for it"!

What is next for Aya the Author? " Well, currently the official launch of the book will be done on June 24th, at Rancho del Sol. It is a Champagne Brunch sync with the book of course and we wick off at 09.00 AM. I promise it will be an interactive event with powerful local guest speakers that will share some of their journey to success".

When can we expect the next book? "Oh honey I am already on my 4th book...working in silence as I like to call it (smiles)." So readers this intro of Aya as an author, is simply the beginning to greater things and visions that she has when it comes to self growth and sharing that positive experience with others.

If You Have Not Traveled...You Have Not LIVED

As the vacation season approaches, kids are out of school, summer is around the corner and it is time to take a break from your colleagues at work, I am sure you are currently evaluating if you can even afford to travel...

I have had this discussion amount many of my peers and it amazes me each time to encounter different line of thoughts. The most common one is the perception that in order to travel you need to have excess amount of funds. And granted there is a point in your life where you can demand to be in comfort as you travel....we will leave the rough days for those college years where you lived from student loans to student loans. 

Every travel naysayer believes their situation is special, that they can’t manage what someone else did for reason X, Y, or Z. And it’s not just travel. We all make excuses as to why we can’t do something we desire. “The gym is too far away.” “Just one more cookie won’t hurt.” “I’m not tall enough to play basketball.” We believe we’ll never accomplish that great thing we aspire to because we lack the one secret ingredient to make it happen.When it comes to travel, people think what’s holding them back is money. They imagine they can’t travel because, finances is the biggest obstacle to make their dream trip a reality. 

By thinking that in order for you to travel you need to be blessed with a "golden spoon in your mouth" limits your ability to cross a mental barrier. You do not have to be special, or unique or rich to be able to travel. By believing that everyone else is special, unique, or rich, we might end up putting a psychological barrier that lets you ignore all the reasons why travel is feasible and sometimes it just takes a little bit of good planning and creativity to make it work. 

Living on an island, clearly our means that we have to travel to reach out to the rest of the world, but my love for travelling developed at a very young age and it has growth with me all the way to adulthood. I have been lucky enough to also have a circle of friends that love to travel. You will not believe how cost effective it can be to travel in GROUPS! 

If you are looking to plan a fun trip with your girls or a family reunion abroad...this summer might be cutting it too close. But this means that you can plan better in 2018 and save in order to make this happen. I understand there is some monetary requirement to travel. There’s a limit to how cheap it can be and how many free flights you can earn. There are always circumstances such as health, visa issues, debts, or family that will keep someone from the road. Not everyone can (or wants) to travel the world.

But, in my experience, what keeps the vast majority of people home is not money but mindset. It is the false belief that their circumstances are different and everyone else who travels has money or privilege they don’t. They have bought into the belief that traveling is a luxury for those with means and, unless you’re on the inside, you’ll never be able to make it happen. Everyone and everything else that tells them otherwise is dismissed as “too easy” or “too good to be true.”If you truly desire to travel, you will find a way. For some, it will take more effort and time (maybe years), but you can do it.

If you wake up today and tell yourself, “I’m too poor to travel” or “I can’t because of reason X,” you’ll never look for ways to start traveling. You will only see roadblocks. You see only the reasons why you can’t travel — bills, flights, car payments, debt, family, or more. You’ll never peer beyond those roadblocks and ask yourself “How do I overcome these obstacles like those other people?” The only difference between those on the road and those not on it is that those on it kept saying “yes” to travel instead of “I can’t.”

Wake up today and say “Yes, I can travel too” and start looking for what you can do right now to make that happen. Start small. Each yes builds on itself and on the one before it. Look at your day-to-day spending. How much would you save if you bought a water filter instead of a daily bottle of water, cooked more of your own food, or drank less? What if you gave up cable? Downgraded your phone plan? Sold off your unneeded stuff at a yard sale? Find ways to supplement your income by using your extra skills that will generate additional cash / revenues. 

I take traveling very serious, here are some of my tips: 

  • start planning at the beginning of the year 
  • allocate an amount per month to your savings and be disciplined about it 
  • do more group travel to save costs 
  • travel with people that have the same interest, that way the trip itself is easier to coordinate
  • Use a monthly overview tracker to help you know where you stand with your finances 
  • research in advance the destination and the most cost effective and fun things that you would like to do 
  • the idea is for you to create memories while you are exploring something new 
  • try to remain objective to try new things 

My greatest and most valuable advice is: HAVE FUN WITH IT. It makes no sense to travel under stressful circumstances (unless it is a trip that involves less happier circumstances like funerals, medicals etc). Traveling opens up your mind to the rest of the world, it lets you interact with different cultures and it gives you a reality check where sometimes you really evaluate and appreciate what you have HOME. 



Power Soca Workout

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Soca Class with Ms. Kimberly Milan as the instructor at National Institute Of Arts. 

Kimberly was born in The Netherlands, comes from Arubian parents, but was raised in St. Maarten and Aruba. Kimberly started dancing at the age of 6 at Motiance dance school up until 14 years of age and was taught by dance teachers such as Arlene Halley and Evelyn Fleming. With a diverse dancing style, she took classes in the following dance styles: Jazz, Ballet, Afro-Caribbean and Modern. A few years after the family relocated to Aruba and she continued dancing at Simadanza with teacher such as Astrid Salazar and Ina Profeet.

After graduating high school in Aruba Kimberly continued her studies in The Netherlands. She attended Codarts Rotterdam, graduated with a Bachelor in Dance Education in 2006 specialized in Jazz and Tap. Kimberly also attained a Bachelor in English Education and graduated in 2013.

She has a wide history of dance classes and has worked with all age groups and in many different settings. To name a few: in Primary schools, dance schools and Secondary education,

In 2015 Kimberly moved back to St. Maarten which she considers her home. She has been working as a dance teacher at Sundial school and in the afternoon hours she teaches Jazz, Soca, Modern and Street dance at NIA (National Institute of Arts).

Recently she has joined the dance group, “Rhythm and Groove” from the French side of the Island. In addition to this, she also teaches dance classes in the primary school in the afternoon program on both sides of the island. Dancing is her passion and therefore she enjoys her work. She expresses her openness to share new experiences and adventures in dance and she teaches every dance style with my own groovy twist.

I can boast and say that I also have known Kimberly from a very young age, and can indeed testify that dancing has always been her passion. Due to our busy schedules, I end up missing most of her events, however this month of March, is the month to try something NEW! If you are looking for a fun way to work out and if you love to dance, then certainly this class is ideal for you. In addition, studies have demonstrated a considerable correlation between dancing and psychological well-being.

It was such a pleasure to have witnessed a childhood friend in her element of teaching and doing something she has always loved.

Doga...Dance & Yoga With National Institute Of Arts At The University Of St.Martin

On March 18th I attended the D'OGA open house at the University Of St.Martin. I decided that March is the month to try new things.

In the past I attended a class of yoga, and somehow I managed to fall asleep...I remember the instructor telling me it could have been fatigue and that in combination with the breathing exercises my body succumbed to a profound sleep.

It was quite an experience, where your meditation and breathing is put to the tests. For 30 minutes, we were to disconnect with this world and explore our inner universe, through mind, body and soul.  

The Art of Dance and the mindfulness of Yoga combine to give a truly rapturous experience while interacting with your breathing.

Experience movement and self-awareness the best pick me up, and calming experience to start the day. Excellent tips for the corporate women of today. We are so focus on getting things done that most times...we forget to breathe.

Nike Introduces Plus Size Line: Look Cute While Working Out

Nike Is expanding their body positive image and acceptance by introducing their plus size work out wear. The athletic wear giant has just taken their first leap into body inclusivity, debuting a brand new range of women’s plus-size apparel. 

It has always been a struggle as a plus size girl to find cute but yet effective work out clothes. I remember when I started Zumba their biggest size in pants was an XL (might have motivated me to lose a few pounds because those pants were really super CUTE). 

“The days where we have to add ‘female’ before ‘athlete’ are over. She is an athlete, period. And having helped fuel this cultural shift, we celebrate these athletes’ diversity, from ethnicity to body shape,” is what Nike representative shared with the press. 

The brand’s line of women’s workout gear includes variety, color and choices: from leggings and sports bras to sweatshirts and windbreakers—now carries pieces available in sizes 1X, 2X, and 3X. And no, these aren’t just larger versions of their existing collection—the line is comprised of entirely new pieces designed to flatter women with curves, no matter what her size may be. 

They were very smart in visualizing real plus size models for this introduction as well. They snagged two beauties that are making serious waves in the world of curves to face the campaign: Paloma Elesser, model and athlete, and Naomi Shimada, model and activist.

While the fashion industry has been making serious efforts towards being more size inclusive as a whole, there hasn’t been much done in terms of workout wear. We’re not surprised that Nike, one of the biggest athletic brands out there, has finally made the jump—we just hope that it inspires others to do the same.

Psychological and medical research has revealed that dancing can do wonders for your mental, physical, and emotional health. However a surprise is that dancing also improves your brain function on many different levels.

Many times society implies that dancing is also a reflection of your physical capability and endurance. It is to be expected that someone that is on the "heavier" side, cannot possibly dance to their full capacity.

During the last few years, the evolution of plus size women in industries that we only dared to dream of, has been astronomical. With this came the confirmation and motivation that once you put your mind to it, the results are limitless.

This is the reason that when I saw this project of "Just D.A.N.C.E", I immediately was intrigued and wanted to get more information about it. I contacted Ms. Ameera Groeneveldt and she did a great job in filtering everything that I needed to know.

During an extensive but dynamic interview, we were able to discuss and share with our audience how this project was born.

"Ever since I was a little girl I loved dancing. Unfortunately I was the only FAT girl in my ballet class. Meaning that I stood  out when I didn't want to. My tutu and leotard were way to tight because they didn't make ballet clothing in my size, taking all those negative factors into consideration, I decided to quit......Worse decision ever.

Now as an adult I was challenged by my partner to do something that makes me happy. Immediately I thought about a day at the SPA. Since I love being pampered. Then he told me to dig deeper and think back from my childhood. It took me days but I finally had an answer. Dancing! 

Creativity was not encouraged in my home. It was not seen as a career choice and because of that I lost a big piece of happiness that I didn't even know I had. But now that the flame of excitement started to burn, dancing was all I could think about. How it made me feel so good. Like I could do anything..... Be anyone. The sky was the limit. I was beginning to feel the joy I once had and never knew that I lost.

My partner said that he wanted to do something to empower women to feel good, look good and be confident about themselves. Photography, fashion and self confident building sessions are just some of the ways on how he plans on doing it. He saw how hurt women are and decided to do something about it. he inspired me to also do the same. So I decided to contribute to his movement by doing something for women, I wished someone would have done for me when I needed it the most, by doing something I loved and still love: Dancing

DANCE had to have an action and meaning to it. So we decided to give it a meaning. Discover New Confident Energy. Dancing makes me come alive and that's how I want them to feel. I want them to experience a bonding experience like no other. To learn to love the body that they have now while they loose the weight. To look at themselves in the mirror and accept who they see and love what they see. To be in a group of women who they can relate to where they don't stick out and feel FAT, ugly or stupid. Instead they would feel sexy, loved, respected and capable of doing anything they set their minds to. These women will forever be changed for the better".

Although we shared a lot of information the words bonding and empowerment will always stand out. The struggles of weight loss, depression, low self steem, corporate stress etc. all are factors that not only plus size women, but women in general struggle with on a daily basis.

Any platform that can be used to educate, enhance and promote positive body image and self acceptance needs to be supported not only locally or regionally, but globally. It is with this background that an open house was created where your questions could be answered and where you can observe in details the content of this project / program:

I would surely encourage you to visit the open house, with an objective mind and willingness to learn about this new and exciting program. Make it an outing with your friends, and see if its something that will help you....healing is a process and sometimes we have to use our non traditional sources to complete that journey.

Mr. Robert Gibson: A Poet With Passion!

Reading is the best way to relax and even six minutes can be enough to reduce the stress levels by more than two thirds, according to new research.

And it works better and faster than other methods to calm frazzled nerves such as listening to music, going for a walk or settling down with a cup of tea, research found.

I personally discovered my love for reading around 14 years old, and I remember that I started reading the genre of "hisorical romance". I thought that was the best genre in the world....Being a teenager you can be so naïve!

However my PASSION for reading continued to evolve as I was also influenced by some great English teachers, I was able to discover a whole new world of literature. Up to this day reading calms me and relaxes and still has the ability to transport me into a scene in a book.

Stress and the fast pace of life demands that sometimes we forget the simple things in life that makes us smile and happy....For me reading has always been one.

"It really doesn't matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author's imagination.

"This is more than merely a distraction but an active engaging of the imagination as the words on the printed page stimulate your creativity and cause you to enter what is essentially an altered state of consciousness."

It is with this background that I will like to highlight a great regional, talented Author & Poet:

Mr. Robert Gibson

Robert R. Gibson is a Barbadian writer that enjoys painting sensual images with his words.  Although sensuality is his main forte, in his own words he says, "Passion is not always about sex." Passion is anger, sorrow, enthusiasm - his poems are written to evoke intensity.  He has published four anthologies of sensual and romantic poetry: EROTIC, OFFERING, SEDUCTION and QUOTES OF PASSION, which are all available on Amazon.


In 2011, Robert entered the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA), the national arts festival of his native Barbados with three poems – Luscious, Rain, and Goblet.  All three of the poems achieved awards – Luscious received a silver award, and Goblet and Rain received bronze awards.  He also received the Most Promising Poet award for the year.


In 2012, Robert entered NIFCA again and his poem Tribute received a bronze award and yet again in 2016, receiving a bronze for his piece Naniki: Frank Collymore Hall 2016.


His poetry has been published in the National Cultural Foundation’s (NCF) Winning Words anthology in Barbados, the Caribbean Writer and the online St. Somewhere Journal E-zine.

"Do-it-all" generation of women suffering work stress epidemic

Middle aged women two thirds more likely to suffer work stress than male colleagues

The pressure to juggle careers, children and, often, caring for elderly parents is driving soaring levels of workplace stress among middle aged professional women, a leading psychiatrist has warned.

Dr. Judith Mohring said official figures showing a spike in cases of workplace stress among women in their 30s and 40s underlined the pressures on the so-called “do-it-all” generation of women.

It follows official figures showing middle aged women in Britain are almost 70 per cent more likely to suffer work-related stress.

The problem is becoming particularly acute among those in their late 30s and early 40s in which cases have risen by almost a fifth in four years.

Dr Mohring, based at the Priory’s Wellbeing Clinic in central London, said the pressure to maintain “traditional women’s roles” despite a revolution in the workplace was taking its toll.

Recent figures published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that women aged between 35 and 44 in mainland Britain are 67 per cent more likely to suffer work-related stress than men of the same age.

Cases of work-related stress among women in the age-group stands at 2,090 cases per 100,000 working women, compared with a rate of only 1,250 for men of the same age.

The work stress rate among women has jumped 18 per cent in the last four years for those in their late 30s and early 40s.

Among women between 45 and 55 the rate is even higher, at 2,180 cases per 100,000 working women but has fallen slightly over the last four years, from 2,200 per 100,000.

“In professional terms, women’s place in the world has been transformed over the last 50 years,” said Dr. Mohring.

“We now achieve all that men can.

“Perhaps what we haven’t managed so well is to transfer responsibility for some of the more traditional women’s roles.

“So while we might excel at work, we’ll usually pile the pressure on at home too – and that can lead to major stress.

“Women with children will know all too well the tension between being a hands-on mother and managing a busy job.

“But it’s not just mothers who feel they fail to live up to an imaginary feminine ideal.

“Women have so many arenas in which they can compete: how we look, the quality of our friendships, and, of course, the work we produce.

“Sometimes it can feel that there are just too many ways to fail. And that’s when self-doubt, low self-esteem and self-criticism can come to the fore.”

She added that long working hours and high stress levels also appear to be driving professional women to drink.

“From what I see, stress levels are high everywhere. Everybody working today is being driven harder, and asked to deliver so much more than they were even five years ago, and digital saturation means that work follows us home and often, via smartphones, to our bedside.

"Most people I see are too tired to enjoy life outside of work as a result. In the City, 60-plus hour-weeks are not rare.

“Women often don’t come to the clinic until they are at absolute breaking point or they turn to alcohol as a work ‘anesthetic’.

“But still many senior business managers do not believe stress, anxiety or depression is a serious enough reason for employees to take time off work.”

Don't rely on alcohol, smoking or caffeine as your ways of coping. In the long term, they’ll just create more problems

3. Help other people

Evidence shows that people who help others, through volunteering for example, become more resilient.

But you can get the same effect by trying to do someone a favour every day, however small

4. Be grateful

To help focus on the positives in your life, try writing down three things at the end of every day which went well

5. Accept what can't change

When you can't change a difficult situation try to concentrate on the things you do have control over

With the tag line, “Ditch the Workout, Join the Party,” the classes emphasize moving to the music and having a good time, no rhythm required.

There are several different kinds of Zumba classes, from Aqua Zumba workouts to classes like Zumba Toning that incorporate weights for additional calorie burning and strength training. There are even Zumba classes for kids.

Working up a sweat in the 60-minute classes burns an average of 369 calories ... more than cardio kickboxing or step aerobics. You’ll get a great cardio workout that melts fat, strengthens your core, and improves flexibility.

On our beautiful 37 square miles we can boast of the many talented Zumba instructors that are available to the general public and that are active in our community.

Learie Hall 

Learie Hall was born and raised on the lovely island of St. Martin /St. Maarten. He fell in love with the Zumba program. His goal then was to become a licensed Zumba Fitness Instructor which he achieved by 2013. Learie’s Quick and spicy moves is well known on St. Maarten, he was selected out of many to Travel to Statia by request for a Breast Cancer ZUMBATHON. People on St. Maarten often Refers him to as “Zumba King” which he adores. Not only is he the only male certified instructor on the Dutch side but the youngest there is between the Dutch and French St. Martin /St. Maarten Learie instructs classes at the University of Medicine of the Caribbean and at Body Action Gym in Philipsburg.

In keeping up with the many classes, projects and health awareness, this month Learie will produce two Zumba events and is inviting the general public to come out, support and get active.

Zumba Fest 2016

November 15th, 2016

The reason for this event is to showcase a healthy lifestyle, showing that you can have fun while dropping those calories. With the help of Body Action Gym our aim is locate those who are looking for a gym that offers you the best with the best price as well. Also to start a Zumba revelation on St. Maarten, Admission is $5 for non-members of Body Action and the location is LB Scott Auditorium

Last Man Standing “ZUMBATHON”

November 26th, 2016

This event is all about health, at the same all about our children. SKOS Afterschool program has decided to do this zumbathon to raise funds for the Afterschool Program. This event will be four hours of non- stop dancing; the name of this event speaks for its self. Prizes are there to be won by the last man whose last standing. This is the first ever event like this. The program consists of sports, crafts and activity that keep them active. This program is consisting of all catholic school afternoon schools (6). Tickets are on sale for $10 Adults and children $ 5- (ages 5-12).

Having done Zumba for 2 years myself, I can testify to the many benefits that it provides for you. besides the weight lost and promoting a healthier lifestyle it also helped with my stress management.

In a society where stress is dominant on both genders, I realized soon that Zumba was a way of distressing 3 to 4 times a week. It helped to network and meet other women that were also going through some of your same struggles. This made you feel less alone and motivated you to keep going!
